Dolphins 2013-14 Season Odds
MIAMI, FL (The Spread) – After a busy offseason, some believe that the Miami Dolphins are sleepers to make the postseason in 2013.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Dolphins are 40/1 long shots to win the 2014 Super Bowl and 18/1 to win the AFC Conference this season. They’re also +325 to win the AFC East Division and have an over/under total of 8 for number of wins in 2013-14. Their odds of qualifying for the playoffs are +195 for and -250 against.
This offseason the Dolphins re-signed receiver Brian Hartline, placed the franchise tag on defensive lineman Randy Starks, and signed free agents Mike Wallace, Brett Grimes, Dannell Ellerbe, Tyson Clabo, Brandon Gibson and Philip Wheeler. Wallace was the biggest and most costly addition, as he signed a $60 million contract with $27 million guaranteed. Miami also signed free agent Dustin Keller, but the tight end was injured in Week 2 of the preseason and will miss the entire 2013 season.
In the draft the Dolphins traded up to the No. 3 spot to select defensive end Dion Jordan of Oregon. In the second round they selected Boise State cornerback Jamar Taylor and in the third round they nabbed Tennessee offensive tackle Dallas Thomas and Utah State cornerback Will Davis. Jelani Jenkins (Florida), Dion Sims (Michigan State), Mike Gillislee (Florida), Caleb Sturgis (Florida) and Don Jones (Arkansas State) filled out the rest of the 2013 draft class.
The key to Miami’s success in 2013 is second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who reportedly turned heads with his training camp performances. If he and Wallace can develop chemistry quickly, the Dolphins have a chance to challenge for a wild card berth in the AFC. But left tackle remains a huge question mark following Jake Long’s departure to St. Louis, and teams that spend big usually wind up disappointing when the regular season comes around (a la the Eagles’ “Dream Team” of 2011).
