49ers’ 2014 Win Total Odds
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Will the San Francisco 49ers rack up 10-plus wins for the fourth straight year?
The 49ers were active this offseason, trading for receiver Stevie Johnson, quarterback Blaine Gabbert and offensive tackle Jonathan Martin. They also signed receiver Brandon Lloyd in free agency, safety Anoine Bethea and cornerback Chris Cook.
Colt McCoy, Anthony Dixon, Mario Manning and Jonathan Goodwin were all part of the Niners’ free agent losses this offseason. Tarell Brown also signed with Oakland while Donte Whitner jettisoned to Cleveland via free agency. Cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Eric Wright were both released by the team.
The 49ers also invested the 30th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft in safety Jimmie Ward from Northern Illinois. In the second they took Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde and in the third they nabbed USC center Marcus Martin, Wisconsin linebacker Chris Borland and South Carolina offensive tackle Brandon Thomas. Overall it was another successful draft for GM Trent Baalke.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the 49ers’ win total for 2014 has been set at over/under 10.5 games. It’s hard not to like the over although San Fran does have some concerns on the defensive side of the ball. Aldon Smith is facing a possible suspension after multiple off-field issues landed him in hot water once again. Linebacker Navarro Bowman could miss up to six weeks of the regular season as he rehabs from a nasty knee injury suffered in the NFC title game, while players like Justin Smith are another year older.
The offense could potentially have some issues as well, as guard Alex Boone and tight end Vernon Davis are threatening to hold out in efforts to get a pay raise. The Niners still have Colin Kaepernick, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and one of the best offensive lines in football, but losing Boone and Davis would be significant blows. At some point all of those extra games the Niners have been playing the past three years will catch up to the team and they’ll suffer a setback. Don’t rule out the possibility that the setback will happen in 2014.
