NFL Rookie of The Year Odds
A serious handicapper invests time in the offseason analyzing NFL betting markets
and sportsbooks always have lines on the winners of the NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards, among other markets. The amount of options can be overwhelming but we studied these markets in particular and found value.
Below we break down two bets to win these awards next season, including NFL odds and what to expect from each player. We also go over how to bet on these players and when.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Bet
Drake London, Falcons Wide Receiver (+1200 at BetOnline)
Drake London was one of the top wide receivers in the nation last season despite playing only eight games because of an ankle injury. London had 88 receptions for 1,084 receiving yards and seven touchdowns and before his injury he was on pace to break Marqise Lee’s USC records in receptions (118) and receiving yards (1,721), which were set in 2012. London had five games with 10 or more receptions and six contests with at least 130 receiving yards.
His ability as a big-play wideout is evident and in Atlanta he will be the focal point of the offense. It’s big opportunity for him and he will relish this challenge. London will likely compete for targets with tight end Kyle Pitts and Cordarrelle Patterson but he will be the team’s WR1 and he should make an impact from day one.
The biggest concern I have for London is the quarterback situation of the Falcons. Marcus Mariota and rookie Desmond Ridder will compete for the starting job at quarterback and both have a lot to prove but new offensive coordinator Dave Ragone can find ways to put London in positions to succeed in the offense, regardless of who is under center. Bet on London to win this award during the offseason, especially early, because he is a sleeper pick.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Bet
Aidan Hutchinson, Lions Defensive End (+450 at BetOnline)
Star Defensive End Aidan Hutchinson is coming off a breakout season for Michigan. Not only was he a Heisman Trophy finalist but Hutchinson also set a school single-season sack record with 14 sacks. In Detroit, Hutchinson should be an immediate starter as an outside linebacker.
Drafting Hutchinson was the safest and smartest move for the Lions, as his presence will give them an instant upgrade with their pass rush. Hutchinson was an infectious leader at Michigan and a catalyst.
Look for more of the same from him in Detroit, where he walks into a similar role to the one he had in college. Not to mention that his skills fit a need for the Lions. I anticipate Hutchinson to have a chance at a long career with the Lions, starting with a solid rookie season and a big chance to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. My advice is, bet on Hutchinson to win this award during the first month of the season if he has a strong start to his career.
