How many games will Manziel start?
CLEVELAND, OH (The Spread) – How many games will Johnny Manziel start as a rookie? Here are the odds.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the over/under for number of games that Manziel will start for the Browns in his first year has been set at 9.5 (-120). So for every $120.00 that you wager on either the over or the under, you’ll win $100.00 if you win that bet.
The Browns traded up with the Eagles to select Manziel with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft last Thursday night. There was immediate excitement in Cleveland again as fans purchased over 1,500 season tickets hoping to see Manziel, who has been deemed a boom-or-bust prospect.
But how many games will he start, if at all, as a rookie in 2014? The main obstacle standing in his way is former undrafted signal-caller Brian Hoyer, who is coming off an ACL tear in 2013. But despite Hoyer’s injury situation, he’s still the favorite to win the starting quarterback job heading into preseason.
Browns’ management continues to say the right things when it comes to Manziel having to compete for the starting job. New coach Mike Pettine insisted following the selection of Manziel that the former Texas A&M QB won’t be thrusts into the starting lineup right away. Owner Jimmy Haslam also stated that Manziel is the backup and is expected to prove himself.
That said, SI’s Peter King wrote that he would be “surprised” if “Johnny Football” doesn’t win the starting gig and is in the lineup before Week 1. For those wanting to take the over in this prop bet, the key will be Manziel starting Week 1 and winning a few early games. If that’s the case, then he’s likely to finsih the year as the starter and he’ll cruise over that number of 9.5.
