Seahawks re-sign Michael Bennett
SEATTLE, WA (The Spread) – In a somewhat surprising move, the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a new contract with free agent Michael Bennett.
We use the term “surprising” because for all intents and purposes it looked like Bennett would be signing with the Chicago Bears when the free agency period begins on Tuesday in the NFL. But Bennett ultimately decided to take less money and play for the defending Super Bowl champions instead of joining his brother Martellus in Chicago.
According to Profootballtalk.com, the deal is a four-year contract worth $34 million and includes $16 million guaranteed. Bennett racked up 8.5 sacks last year for Seattle and forced a fumble as the Seahawks went on to beat the Broncos in the Super Bowl. With Bennett off the market, the Bears may turn their attention to Michael Johnson, a free agent pass rusher that has played his entire career in Cincinnati.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Seahawks remain 11/2 favorites to win the 2015 Super Bowl after opening as Super Bowl favorites. The 49ers, meanwhile, have the next-best odds at 13/2 while the Patriots are 9/1 and the Broncos are 10/1. The Bears, for what it’s worth, are 25/1, which give them the same odds as the Chiefs and Eagles.
