Patriots letting Wilfork become a FA
FOXBOROUGH, MA (TheSpread) – The New England Patriots have elected not to pick up the option on defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, leaving the veteran defensive tackle as a free agent.
Wilfork tweeted out Thursday morning a statement that the Patriots have let him know that they will not be picking up his option. He then thanked the organization for their time and said he still has great passion to play football and feels he can do it at a high level. The defensive tackle market is very deep in free agency this year, even more so now with Wilfork in the mix.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the New England Patriots are listed at 6/1 to repeat as Super Bowl champions next season. The Seattle Seahawks are the favorite at 11/2 while the Green Bay Packers have 7/1 odds.
Wilfork has spent all 11 seasons of his NFL career with the Patriots, racking up 516 tackles and 16 sacks in his career. This past season he had 47 tackles but didn’t record a sack. The Patriots went 12-4 last season, winning the AFC East and Super Bowl 49 in a battle with Seattle. The Patriots had the ninth-best rushing defense in the NFL, holding opponents to 104.3 yards per game.
