Underdogs cashing in recent Super Bowls
How have underdogs fared at the betting window in recent Super Bowls? Quite well, actually.
The underdog has hit in six of the last eight Super Bowls dating back to the Giants' victory over the Patriots as a 12-point dog in Super Bowl XLII. Including New York's victory in that game, the underdog has also won outright in five of the last eight Super Bowls as well.
Of the six underdogs that covered since 2008, all four teams that were getting more than a field goal cashed for bettors. Those teams included the Giants in 2008 (+12), the Cardinals in 2009 (+7 vs. Steelers), the Saints in 2010 (+5 vs. Colts), and the Ravens in 2013 (+4.5 vs. 49ers). According to online sports book BetDSI, the Broncos are currently 6-point underdogs versus the Panthers for Super Bowl 50 this year.
Depending on which sports book you viewed, last year's Super Bowl line was either a pick'em or New England -1 versus Seattle. The Seahawks were on the verge of making it seven-of-eight for Super Bowl underdogs, but Malcolm Butler preserved the 28-24 victory for the Patriots.
