TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida State defensive back Derwin James is having surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.
Coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday there is no timetable how long the sophomore will be out, but he is optimistic that James can return this season.
James suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s win over Charleston Southern. The second-ranked Seminoles travel to No. 10 Louisville on Saturday.
The 6-foot-3, 211-pound James is used as a safety, nickelback and edge rusher and is one of the team’s top tacklers. He had eight tackles and an interception in the opener against then-No. 11 Mississippi and recorded three tackles against Charleston Southern.
Sophomore A.J. Westbrook or senior Nate Andrews are in the mix to start in place of James.
