STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) -Tarleton State had 63 points and 602 total yards, and still didn’t win.
Bernard Scott ran for school-record 283 yards and six touchdowns, including a winning 10-yard score with a minute left Saturday, to give Abilene Christian a 70-63 NCAA Division II victory.
Tarleton State’s 63 points matched the most points ever scored by a losing team in a game that didn’t go to overtime. But that record stood for only a few hours.
Later Saturday night, Weber State beat Portland State 73-68 to set an NCAA all-division record for most points in a game, as well as the most points by a losing team. Weber State and Portland State are in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as I-AA.
The final score of the Abilene-Tarleton game matched San Jose State’s 70-63 regulation victory over Rice on Oct. 2, 2004.
Scott, who had 29 carries, also completed a pass for 66 yards. Abilene Christian had 715 total yards, the second-highest in team history.
The combined 1,317 total yards set a Lone Star Conference record, as did the 133 points.
