LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Another high-profile transfer is struggling at Kansas.
Jake Heaps was briefly benched in favor of freshman quarterback Montell Cozart in a 34-19 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. It immediately brought back memories of last season, when former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist was benched during the Jayhawks’ 1-11 season.
Heaps was just 5 of 13 for 16 yards against the Sooners. Kansas coach Charlie Weis said he’d been planning on taking the redshirt off Cozart, who brings the ability to run to the field, but Heaps’ ineffectiveness only made the decision easier.
For now, it appears Heaps will remain the starter. But as the 2-4 Jayhawks prepare to face Baylor next Saturday, he suddenly has Cozart looking over his shoulder.
