BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -Cory Koenig rushed for 259 yards and four touchdowns as South Dakota State beat Cal Poly 48-35 in the Jackrabbits’ Great West Conference opener on Saturday.
Koenig ran 21 times and scored on runs of 32, 46, 52 and 11 yards for SDSU (3-4, 1-0 GWC), which snapped a four-game winning streak by the Mustangs (4-3, 1-1). Cal Poly is ranked 20th in the Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll.
SDSU outgained the Mustangs 502-433 in total offense.
The Jackrabbits sets the tone early when Adam Monke took the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. SDSU took a 28-14 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs got within 28-21 on Jonathan Dally’s 4-yard touchdown run with 13:22 left in the third quarter, but SDSU responded with a score by Koenig and a 25-yard TD pass from Ryan Berry to JaRon Harris.
Berry was 13-for-20 for 121 yards and two scores. He hooked up with Kyle Minett from 10 out in the second quarter.
Dally rushed for 161 yards and three scores for Cal Poly. He scored from 22, 4 and 1 yard and was 7-for-15 for 115 passing yards. Ryan Mole added 114 yards rushing for the Mustangs, who ran for 387 yards.
Ramses Barden caught three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. A 22-yard scoring reception in the fourth quarter gave him 26 touchdowns, tying the Cal Poly career touchdown reception record.
