COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -South Carolina starting guard James Thompson was suspended for Saturday’s opener with Louisiana-Lafayette.
Athletic spokesman Steve Fink would not say why Thompson didn’t play. “Coach Spurrier will address that after the game,” Fink said.
Thompson, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound senior, becomes the fourth starter from last year to miss the game.
Quarterback Blake Mitchell was suspended one game for missing too many summer school classes.
Safety Emanuel Cook is recovering from an emergency appendectomy last weekend. He was arrested on a weapons charge on Aug. 24. Defensive end Jordin Lindsey was out with academic concerns.
Two reserves, running back Bobby Wallace and defensive back Chris Hail, also were serving one-game suspensions for academic reasons.
Backup Lemuel Jeanpierre, a sophomore, started in place of Thompson against the Ragin’ Cajuns.
