CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) -Corey Lewis rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns to lead Northern Iowa to a 41-14 win over Minnesota State, Mankato on Thursday night.
Northern Iowa (1-0) broke open a tight game with two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter. Darin Williams scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the quarter, and Lewis rushed in from 20 yards on the Panthers’ next possession.
Eric Sanders threw for 295 yards and one touchdown as Northern Iowa collected 503 yards of total offense.
Ben King threw for 245 yards to lead the Mavericks (1-1).
The Panthers scored on three of their first four possessions for a 17-0 lead before the Mavericks’ Kelvin Rodgers returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
The Mavericks kept the game close until the second half, and even had a chance to take the lead in the third quarter before Tori Chappell fumbled the ball at Northern Iowa’s 25, and the Panthers’ preserved a 20-14 lead.
