COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson was taken off the field on a stretcher in the second quarter against South Carolina on Thursday night after taking a knee to the head while being sacked.
Wilson, a freshman making his first start, was tackled by Gamecocks defensive end Jordin Lindsey. The side of Wilson’s head hit the knee of South Carolina’s Cliff Matthews and his neck was wrenched sideways.
Wilson lay on the ground as North Carolina State trainers and coaches rushed to his side. His Wolfpack teammates came off the sidelines and onto the field kneeling as Wilson was strapped to a stretcher and rolled onto a cart as fans applauded.
Wilson extended his thumbs upward to the crowd as he was carted off. He was taken to a hospital to be examined.
