The parents of a Frostburg State University football player who died after a second concussion accuse coaches at the Maryland school of conducting dangerous drills that caused repeated blows to the head.
A wrongful-death lawsuit says that 22-year-old Derek Sheely, of Germantown, Md., returned to play despite bleeding from the forehead during the 2011 training camp.
The lawsuit, filed last week in state court, also names the NCAA and head coach Thomas Rogish as defendants.
Spokeswomen for the school and the NCAA say they have no immediate comment.
The lawsuit says that Sheely died after full-speed drills that were “gladiatorial thrills” for the coaches. It says players were marginalized if they complained of injuries.
Separate lawsuits over football-related concussions have been filed against both the NCAA and the NFL.
