COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -South Carolina safety Emmanuel Cook was arrested on a gun charge Friday.
Cook was charged with unlawful possession of a pistol, according to the Richland County Detention Center’s Web site.
Lt. Chris Cowan of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said university police made the arrest. Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore, started five of 10 games last season. He had 47 tackles last season.
Messages left for South Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Fink were not immediately returned.
Cook’s arrest comes a day after coach Steve Spurrier said three players, including starting quarterback Blake Mitchell, would sit out the first game against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 1 because of excessive absences during summer school. Running back Bobby Wallace and defensive back Chris Hail will miss the game.
