SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator is hoping to use his team’s blowout loss to Alabama in the BCS title game in January as a way to motivate his players this spring.
Bob Diaco says the Fighting Irish need to turn that loss into a positive, using it to make the team better next season. He’s also telling the Irish that they shouldn’t try to build on last season’s success when they finished seventh in the nation in total defense.
Diaco says the players must understand they are starting from scratch. Linebacker Carlo Calabrese says the Irish realize it’s a new start with a new mix of players. He says the team knows it must work to become a dominant defense again.
