SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -The University of Rhode Island has promoted defensive coordinator Joe Trainer to be its football coach.
Trainer was introduced Friday as the replacement for Darren Rizzi, who stepped down last week to take an assistant coaching position with the Miami Dolphins.
The 39-year-old Trainer served last year as Rhode Island’s associate head coach and defensive coordinator.
He was previously an assistant coach at Villanova and Bowling Green as well as head coach at Millersville University.
The Rams were 3-9 in Rizzi’s single season leading the team.
