FSU has rough 2019 season
It’s been quite a season for Florida State. The team fired head coach Willie Taggart during the season and the Seminoles hired Memphis coach Mike Norvell to take over going forward. FSU is coming off a 40-17 loss to Florida to end the regular season. Florida State is 6-6 on the season, 4-7-1 against the spread and 6-6 with the over/under total.
FSU is putting up 29.1 points and 403.2 yards per game on offense this year. Defensively, the Seminoles are giving up 28.5 points and 436 yards per game. Their pass defense was among the worst in the nation, giving up 283.5 yards per game. FSU is going to be without a number of players in this game, as quite a few have decided not to play. Among the biggest is leading rusher Cam Akers, who had 1,144 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. James Blackman is leading the team with 2,095 passing yards and 16 touchdowns while Tamorrion Terry is the leading receiver with 51 catches for 1,023 yards and eight scores.
Arizona State playing well
Arizona State ended its regular season on a high note with wins over Oregon and Arizona at home. ASU comes into this game 7-5 overall, 4-7-1 against the spread and 6-6 with the over/under total.
The Sun Devils were a pretty solid defense this season, allowing just 23.1 points and 387.1 yards per game. Their run defense allowed just 117 yards per game. Offensively, ASU is putting up 25.2 points and 379.6 yards per game. Jayden Daniels has had a pretty solid year. He has thrown for 2,748 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 319 yards and three scores. His leading receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, won’t play in this one. Aiyuk had 1,192 yards and eight scores. Eno Benjamin is the team’s leading rusher with 1,083 yards and 10 touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Florida State is 10-3-1 against the spread in their last 14 bowl games, but just 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games as an underdog.
The Sun Devils are 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 bowl games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven games on a neutral field.
Arizona State is a team that has been competitive with everyone it plays, even in losses. I think today could be slightly different because the Seminoles are going to be without some key players and are still using a replacement head coach. Things could change for FSU next season, but this year’s team is still in a funk. I expect Arizona State’s defense to be able to keep FSU’s offense in check while Daniels make some solid plays with the ball to lead the Sun Devils to a win and cover.
Sun Bowl Prediction: Arizona State -4.5
