FIU suffers OT loss
Florida International has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and is coming off a 30-27 OT loss at Marshall to end the regular season. FIU is 6-6 on the season, 4-8 against the spread and 6-6 with the over/under total.
The Panthers are average on both sides of the ball. The FIU offense is averaging 26.5 points and 371.5 yards per game, while the defense is giving up 26.7 points and 379.8 yards per contest. FIU is led by James Morgan, who has thrown for 2,248 yards and 13 touchdowns. Anthony Jones is the team’s top rusher with 802 yards and nine touchdowns, while Napoleon Maxwell has 609 rushing yards and eight scores. Tony Gaiter IV is the leading receiver with 49 catches for 607 yards and four touchdowns.
Red Wolves end win streak
Arkansas State had a four-game win streak come to an end in the regular season finale, suffering a 34-30 loss at South Alabama. The Red Wolves are 7-5 on the season, 5-7 against the spread and 7-5 with the over.
The Red Wolves have a pretty potent offense, but a defense that has struggled. Arkansas State is putting up 33.7 points and 432.2 yards per game, while the defense is allowing 34.8 points and 480.6 yards per contest. Layne Hatcher started the year as a backup QB, but has thrown for 2,553 yards and 23 touchdowns. Omar Bayless is the team’s top receiver with 84 catches for 1,473 yards and 16 touchdowns. Marcel Murray has led the ground attack with 782 yards and six scores.
College Football Betting Trends
FIU
The Golden Panthers are 5-1 with the over in their last six against a winning team and 5-2 with the over in their last seven games as an underdog.
Arkansas State
The Red Wolves are 5-2 with the over in their last seven games as a favorite, but 4-1 with the under in their last five games in December.
Prediction:
The total is being set pretty high, but I think it’s a touch too high. FIU can’t afford to get into a shootout if it is going to be competitive in this game. The Panthers just don’t have the playmakers that the Red Wolves do. Even with Arkansas State having a rough defense, I don’t see FIU being able to take advantage of it. I think the Wolves will find some trouble with a pretty solid pass defense from FIU that gave up only 178.5 yards per game through the air.
Camellia Bowl Prediction: FIU/Arkansas State Under 63
