THE PUBLIC LIKES: West Virginia. As of Saturday morning, over 70% of betting tickets are on the Mountaineers to cover the small spread.
HISTORICAL TRENDS LIKE: Texas is 6-2-1 against the spread in its last nine games overall while West Virginia is 3-1-1 against the number in its last five home games. The Mountaineers are also 6-2-1 at the betting window in their last nine games played in November while Texas is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six games versus a team with a winning record.
WHO WE LIKE: Texas. I have to ride with the Longhorns and Tom Herman, who is 14-1 against the spread as an underdog dating back to his days as an offensive coordinator at Ohio State. That’s remarkable.
The Longhorns have also played a much tougher schedule than the Mountaineers, losing to USC in overtime, losing to Oklahoma State by a field goal, and losing to Oklahoma by five points. Granted, those were all losses so you could make the argument that Herman’s guys are just finding ways to lose close. But West Virginia has also played opponents close to the vest, with wins by 5, 4 and 2 in Big 12 play. Texas also has the edge on defense, so I’m riding with the Longhorns.
Texas is 6-2-1 against the spread in its last nine games overall while West Virginia is just 9-25-1 against the number in its last 35 games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in its previous game.
