Baylor Bears
Baylor sophomore QB Charlie Brewer (concussion) went 4-of-8 for 56 yards and two touchdowns off the bench in Saturday’s 35-31 come-from-behind win over Oklahoma State. Brewer cleared out of the concussion protocol late in the week and was cleared to play but curiously didn’t start. Instead, redshirt junior QB Jalan McClendon got the call for his first career start — and struggled mightily, including a brutal interception into the end zone in the first quarter. HC Matt Rhule pulled the plug on McClendon late in the third quarter and inserted Brewer, and the offense immediately started clicking. Brewer’s eight-yard TD pass to Denzel Mims to take a 35-31 lead with :07 left will go down as perhaps the most memorable play of Baylor’s season.
Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State freshman QB Brock Purdy completed 16-of-22 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 27 yards in Saturday’s 27-3 win over Kansas. Purdy’s best friend was freakazoid WR Hakeem Butler, who made a few ridiculous plays en route to a 5-164-2 line. The Cyclones are now bowl eligible at 6-3. They’ll look to stay in the Big 12 title game hunt next week against Baylor.
