And the Current Heisman Favorite is...
The Heisman Trophy race is wide open. So who's favored through the first 10 weeks of the college football season?
1. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Mayfield is now a 1/2 odds favorite to win the Heisman trophy. Mayfield threw for 598 yards and five touchdowns in Oklahoma's thrilling win over Oklahoma State on Saturday in the "Bedlam Game." He also threw a potentially crushing interception late in the fourth quarter but SI.com's Bruce Feldman doesn't believe that hurt Mayfield's Heisman chances. In fact, Feldman believes the award is the quarterback's to lose.
2. Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
Behind Mayfield in terms of the odds is Barkley, who is 3/2 to win the Heisman this year. The junior rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries in the Nittany Lions' loss to Michigan State in Week 10. He also caught three passes for 33 yards. Barkley has only gone over 100 yards rushing in three games this season but he's clearly one of the best players in the nation. Outside of his kick return for touchdown to open the Ohio State game, both the Buckeyes and Spartans have contained the PSU back the last two weeks. The Nittany Lions are a 31-point home favorite versus Rutgers on Saturday but currently are not receiving the majority of the bets in that game.
3. Josh Adams, RB, Notre Dame
Adams is 8/1 to win the Heisman Trophy and missing the second half of Notre Dame's victory over Wake Forest due to a concussion. He was cleared in a concussion test but with the Fighting Irish ahead 31-10 there was no reason to take any chances with the star back. Adams could have his "Heisman moment" this Saturday when Notre Dame travels to Miami to take on the undefeated Hurricanes. The Irish are currently a 3.5-point road favorite in that game after opening as a 1.5-point favorite.
4. Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
Love rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in the Cardinal's 24-21 loss to Washington State last weekend. The redshirt junior sat out against Oregon State two weeks ago while nursing an ankle injury but managed to play versus the Cougars. He had a 52-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter but that was about it. Love is currently 12/1 to win the Heisman.
5. J.T. Barrett, QB, Ohio State
Barrett is now a 40/1 long shot to win the Heisman following his disastrous performance in the Buckeyes' loss to Iowa. Barrett nearly had his Heisman moment in that thrilling come-from-behind victory over Penn State in Week 9 but then threw it all away versus the Hawkeyes. He completed 18-of-34 passes for 208 yards with three touchdowns and a whopping four interceptions in the 55-28 loss. It's highly unlikely that Barrett puts together enough in voters' eyes over the next month to win the award. The Buckeyes host the Spartans at Noon ET on Saturday. They're currently a 14.5-point favorite.
