Oregon vs. Stanford Pick
After getting a monumental win over USC last week, No. 7 Oregon has to avoid an emotional letdown when it faces Stanford on Saturday at 3:30PM ET from Stanford Stadium.
Bet Oregon at Stanford
The Ducks are 7-1 on the year and 6-2 against the spread. After losing to Boise State 19-8 in the season opener, Oregon has won seven straight. The Ducks still struggled in week two, narrowly defeating Purdue, 38-36, but have been rolling since, covering the spread in their last six games. Oregon has won four of its last five games by at least 24 points. Oregon has defeated Stanford in seven-straight meetings by an average of 23 points.
Stanford is 5-3 on the season and 5-3 against the spread, with every straight-up loss also being a loss in the betting line for the Cardinal. Stanford is unbeaten at home this year and was able to defeat Washington a week after the Huskies defeated USC this season. Stanford beat the Huskies 34-14 at home.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Oregon 7-point road favorites over Stanford on Saturday night. The over/under total for this game has been established at 57.
Oregon has a lot of work to do to cover the odds in this game as Stanford has quietly put together a good season behind coach Jim Harbaugh. The Cardinal are scoring nearly 32 points per-game on offense and have one of the top passing attacks in the Pac-10. The Ducks have been the top defense in the conference, allowing just 17 points and 300 yards per-game. Andrew Luck has thrown for 1,825 yards and nine touchdowns for Stanford, but has been set up by Toby Gerhart, who has run for 994 yards and 13 touchdowns. For Stanford to cover, Gerhart has to have success on first down to set up the passing game and allow the Cardinal to be balanced on offense.
The Ducks are scoring more than any team in the conference, but also have two defensive touchdowns and two special teams touchdowns this season. Stanford has been able to contain teams on defense, giving up just 22.4 points per-game. The Cardinal have been suspect against the pass, but Jeremiah Masoli has only thrown for 1,127 yards and six touchdowns for Oregon this season. For Oregon to overcome the odds, Masoli has to have his best game throwing the ball. The Cardinal will be focused on stopping the running game and LaMichael James, forcing Masoli to be the one that beats them.
Trends show that teams have letdown performances following big wins over rival opponents. Oregon has been a hot team and look like one of the best teams in the country, but we are picking the Ducks to slip up this week against an under-rated Stanford team. Look for the Cardinals to cover with 7-point odds in a defensive battle.
