Wildcats in a freefall
Northwestern is coming off a 20-0 loss at home to Iowa last weekend for a fifth straight loss for the Wildcats. Northwestern is just 1-6 overall, 0-5 in the Big Ten, 2-5 against the spread and 5-2 with the under.
The Wildcats have one of the worst offenses in the nation, averaging just 10.7 points and 266.6 yards per game. The defense isn’t too bad, allowing just 24.4 points and 340.3 yards per game. The team has had QB issues, but Hunter Johnson is expected to return to action this week after dealing with a family issue. Johnson has thrown for 367 yards and a TD, but also has four interceptions. Drake Anderson is the team’s leading rusher with 436 yards and three touchdowns while JJ Jefferson has 12 receptions for 155 yards and two scores.
Hoosiers rolling along
Indiana is coming off a 38-31 win at Nebraska last week for a third straight victory. The Hoosiers are now just 6-2 on the season, 3-2 in the Big Ten, 5-3 against the spread and 4-4 with the over/under total.
The Hoosiers have put up pretty good numbers on both sides of the ball. Indiana is averaging 34 points and 451.1 yards per game on offense this year while the defense is allowing 22.1 points and 324.5 yards per contest on defense. Michael Penix Jr. has thrown for 1,232 yards and 10 touchdowns, but is questionable to play on Saturday due to an upper body injury. Peyton Ramsey has thrown for 1,194 yards and eight touchdowns in his place. Whop Philyor is the leading receiver on the team with 57 catches for 737 yards and three touchdowns while Stevie Scott III is the leading rusher with 621 yards and seven touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Northwestern
The Wildcats are 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 games on fieldturf and 21-7 ATS in their last 28 road games.
Indiana
The Hoosiers are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven home games, but just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games following a cover.
Prediction:
Northwestern has won five straight in this series while covering the spread in three straight. However, these teams are going in very different directions. Even if Johnson returns at QB, his numbers aren’t very good when he has played. The Northwestern offense is a disaster and can’t move the ball through the air at all. Indiana has proven it can score on these middling Big Ten teams. While Northwestern will put up a fight on defense, I don’t see the Wildcats being able to score much on the road against a competitive Indiana defense.
