Michigan State Spartans Game Notes
Payton Thorne was 21-for-29 passing for 265 yards during Saturday’s 34-28 overtime victory against Wisconsin. Thorne logged one of his best overall outings of the season against the Badgers defense, completing over 70 percent of his passes for the third time in seven games. The senior signal-caller also was also extremely efficient while targeting his top two wideouts Jayden Reed and Keon Coleman, as these two combined for 14 catches on 17 targets for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Thorne also connected with tight end Maliq Carr for a game-long 72-yard reception to set up a game-tying touchdown in the third quarter. Thorne will face a much tougher test in the Spartans’ next game against Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Michigan Wolverines Game Notes
Donovan Edwards accrued 16 rushes for 173 yards and two touchdowns and caught one of three targets for 21 yards during Saturday’s 41-17 win against Penn State. Edwards eclipsed 100 rushing yards for the first time in his collegiate career as the Wolverines ran wild over the Nittany Lions. The sophomore back was highly effective as a complementary back alongside Blake Corum, who also recorded 166 rushing yards on 28 carries in Week 7. Edwards also hit a career-long rush on a 67-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, and he tacked on Michigan’s final touchdown of the day with a three-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound back could stand to put up similar performances if Michigan leans heavier into the running game moving forward.
