Jaguars on big losing streak
South Alabama is riding a five-game losing streak following a 37-13 loss at Troy last week. The Jaguars are now just 1-6 on the season, 0-3 in the Sun Belt, 3-4 against the spread and 6-1 with the under.
USA doesn’t have much going for it, as the offense is putting up just 16.3 points and 312.6 yards per game. Defensively, South Alabama is allowing 30.4 points and 405 yards per contest. Tra Minter is leading the offense with 563 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Cephus Johnson has thrown for 891 yards and five touchdowns, but also has seven interceptions. Kawaan Baker is the leading receiver with 21 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns.
App State rolling along
The Appalachian State football team kept its unbeaten season going last weekend with a 52-7 win over UL-Monroe. The Mountaineers are now 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in the Sun Belt, 5-1 against the spread and 3-3 with the over/under total.
The Mountaineers have been pretty steady on both sides of the ball this year. The offense is averaging 42.8 points and 438.7 yards per game while the defense is giving up 21.7 points and 357.8 yards per contest. Darrynton Evans is leading the offense with 676 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns while Zach Thomas has thrown for 1,163 yards and 10 scores while rushing for 224 yards and four scores. Thomas Hennigan is the leading receiver with 27 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns. Akeem Davis-Gaither is leading the defense with 43 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception.
College Football Betting Trends
South Alabama
The Jaguars are 7-20 against the spread in their last 27 against a winning team and 14-31-1 ATS in their last 46 games on fieldturf.
Appalachian State
The Mountaineers have covered the spread in four straight road games and in six straight games against a losing team.
Prediction:
Appalachian State has won the last two meetings with South Alabama, but the Jaguars have covered the spread in two of the last three meetings. The Mountaineers have had some close class on the road, while South Alabama was able to take Georgia Southern to OT at home a few weeks ago. The Mountaineers are likely to find some points, but their defense is questionable and going on the road isn’t easy in college football. South Alabama isn’t an impressive team, but I think the Jaguars do enough to cover this spread.
College Football Week 9 Prediction: South Alabama +27.5
