Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse Prediction
Should No. 17 Virginia Tech have any trouble keeping Syracuse in check when the two meet today at 3:45PM ET?
According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Virginia Tech is the clear favorite on the road, as the Hokies are getting odds of -19.5 points against Syracuse. The over/under total for the contest has been set at 68 points. Virginia Tech has won three of its last five meetings with Syracuse, and the two have hit the under in three of their last four encounters.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 34-3 win at North Carolina last week to improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC. The Hokies are 3-2 with the over on the season thanks to a defense that has been pretty dominating this season. Tech is allowing just 15.6 points and 237.6 yards per game. The VT offense is playing pretty well in 2016 as well, averaging 39 points and 412 yards per game. Jerod Evans has thrown for 1,045 yards and 15 touchdowns to lead the offense while also rushing for 258 yards. Travon McMillian has added 288 rushing yards and three scores.
The Orange are coming off a 28-9 loss at Wake Forest last week. Syracuse is now 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC while going 4-2 with the under. Syracuse is giving up 36 points and 475 yards per game on defense this year while the offense is putting up 25.7 points and 466.8 yards per game. Eric Dungey is leading the offense with 1,886 passing yards and 11 touchdowns while Amba Etta-Tawo has caught 51 passes for 876 yards and six scores. Tawo is currently the leading receiver in the nation when it comes to receiving yards.
The point total is set high for this game, and too high for a Virginia Tech game, in my opinion. The Hokies should be able to slow down Tawo to a degree and the Orange rely heavily on him for their offensive production. While the Hokies may score some points on this Syracuse defense, I don’t see Tech putting up a point total much past 40. I think the Hokies defense will keep Syracuse below 20 as well, keeping the total well below 68.
