Hokies take it to Duke
Just a week after suffering an embarrassing loss at Old Dominion, the Virginia Tech football team bounced back nicely last week by handing Duke its first loss, 31-14. The Hokies are now 3-1 overall, 3-1 against the spread and 2-2 with the over/under.
Tech has been putting up 38 points and 479.5 yards per game this season. The Hokies took a big blow when Josh Jackson was lost to a broken leg, but Ryan Willis has played pretty well in his absence. He has thrown for 527 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions this season. Steven Peoples is leading the Tech ground attack this year with 302 yards on 55 carries and five touchdowns.
Irish off to 5-0 start
Notre Dame earned its biggest win of the season last week when it handled Stanford, 38-17, at home. The Fighting Irish are now 5-0 on the season, 3-2 against the spread and 3-2 with the under. The Irish have hit the over in their last two games.
ND is now averaging 32.8 points and 442.4 yards per game on offense for the year. They have had a real boost with the ball since Ian Book was made the starting QB. He has thrown for 616 yards and seven touchdowns while also rushing for 87 yards and three scores. Tony Jones Jr. has 303 rushing yards and three scores while Jafar Armstrong has run for 245 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, the Irish are holding opponents to just 18.8 points and 340.6 yards per game.
College Football Betting Trends
Virginia Tech
The Hokies have covered the spread in four straight games on grass and in 11 of their last 15 home games.
Notre Dame
Notre Dame is just 2-5 ATS in their last seven games following a win and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games on grass.
Prediction:
After beating Stanford convincingly, the Irish have heard all week that they have an easy road to the playoffs now. I think that is a bit premature and probably not a good message for ND to be hearing all week heading into a tough road game. While the Hokies did lose to Old Dominion, it may have been a wake-up call. Tech looked great last week and now returns home with a chip on its shoulder. I expect the Irish to have a letdown tonight after its big home win. I think they will be buying their hype a little too much and it will lead to a close game, if not an outright loss.
