Cal starting strong
The Golden Bears have gotten off to a 3-0 start to the season thanks to wins over North Carolina, BYU and Idaho State. Cal is 1-1-1 against the spread through the three games while hitting the under in two of three. Dating back to last season, Cal is 4-1-1 against the spread in its last six games.
Cal has had a pretty impressive defense thus far in 2018. The Bears are giving up just 19.3 points and 302.3 yards per game. On offense, California is putting up 30.0 points and 382.3 yards per game. The team used a number of QB’s early, but have settled on Chase Garbers. He has thrown for 449 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. Garbers is also one of three players with over 120 rushing yards for Cal.
Ducks stunned by Stanford
Oregon had a win locked up against Stanford last week but managed to give it away with turnovers. The Ducks fell to 3-1 on the season, 0-1 in the Pac-12 and 0-4 against the spread. They have split the over/under total through four games. As a program, the Ducks have failed to cover in five straight.
Oregon is strong on offense, as usual. They are putting up 46.5 points and 508.3 yards per game thus far. Justin Herbert has thrown for 1,18 6 yards and 13 touchdowns with five interceptions. On the ground, the Ducks have a steady attack as well, led by CJ Verdell and his 314 yards with two scores. Defensively, Oregon is giving up 24.5 points and 326.8 yards per game. Their run defense is holding opponents to 75.5 yards per game.
College Football Betting Trends
Cal
The Bears are 5-1-1 against the spread in their last seven home games and 5-1 ATS in their last six conference games.
Oregon
Oregon is just 6-20 against the spread in its last 26 conference games and the Ducks have failed to cover in four straight road games.
Prediction:
The trends aren’t kind for Oregon, but I really think the Ducks have a positive response to last week’s loss. It was a learning experience for a new head coach, but the fact is Oregon was dominating a pretty good Stanford team. Cal has been impressive thus far as well, but the Bears aren’t a program that has been able to sustain high levels of play for a long time. I like the Oregon ground game to set the tone and lead the Ducks to a win and cover.
