MSU coming off loss
Michigan State had a bye last week and suffered a 16-13 loss at Arizona State the week prior. MSU is 1-1 on the season with an 0-2 mark against the spread and a 1-1 mark with the total. The Spartans are just 2-4 against the spread in their last six.
Through two games, MSU is putting up 25.5 points and 414.5 yards per game while the defense is giving up 23.5 points and 384 yards per contest. Their run defense is giving up just 34.5 yards per game. Brian Lewerke is leading the team with 601 passing yards and three touchdowns while LJ Scott is the leading rusher with 103 yards. Scott is dealing with a hamstring injury, but expected to play on Saturday. Cody White has caught 14 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
Indiana is off to a 3-0 start with wins over FIU, Virginia and Ball State. The Hoosiers are just 1-2 against the spread while hitting the under in two of three games. The Hoosiers are just 2-7 against the spread in their last nine games.
Indiana hasn’t usually been known for good defense, but the Hoosiers are giving up just 18 points and 322.7 yards per game this season. Their pass defense is allowing just 135 yards per game. On offense, IU is averaging 32 points and 436.3 yards per game. Steve Scott is leading the offense with 388 rushing yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Peyton Ramsey has thrown for 479 yards and five touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Michigan State is just 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 road games and 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine games on fieldturf.
Indiana is 2-9-1 against the spread in its last 12 games overall and 3-12-1 against the spread in its last 16 Big Ten games.
The home team has covered the spread in three straight in this series, including a 24-21 OT win for Indiana. The Spartans are a team that seems to play to the level of its competition and that is dangerous on the road. Indiana isn’t lacking in confidence right now and the Hoosiers believe they can win this game. MSU is struggling to run the ball right now, which it will need to do. MSU’s defense should give Indiana trouble, but I don’t know that I trust the Spartans to score enough on the road to cover, and maybe even win. I’m going with the Hoosiers.
