San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State redshirt sophomore QB Montel Aaron completed 13-of-25 passes for just 94 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday’s 31-0 loss at Washington State. Aaron was making his first start of the season after Josh Love opened under center last week in a loss to FCS UC Davis. The good news is that no one else stepped up in the shutout loss on The Palouse, but the bad news is Aaron has very little tools around him and it appears like it is going to be another long year for the Spartans. The hard road continues with another Pac-12 opponent, Oregon, on the schedule next weekend in Eugene.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon freshman WR Jalen Hall has been dismissed from the team following his arrest on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and burglary. Police reportedly apprehended Hall and a suspected accomplice after responding to an alert regarding a home invasion burglary on Monday afternoon. The two were actually caught after they had fled the scene, when they were pulled over for reckless driving. While this is Hall’s first arrest, the former four-star recruit left the team during spring practice and did not start out August camp with the Ducks, so there’s clearly been quite a bit going on behind the scenes leading up to this point. Coming out of high school over the winter, he ranked as 247Sports’ No. 127 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
Betting Trends
San Jose State
The Spartans are 2-7 against the spread in their last nine road games and are 3-15 against the number in their last 18 games in September.
Oregon
The Ducks are 2-11-1 against the spread in their last 14 games coming off a win.
Prediction
Even though this is a lookahead spot for Oregon I simply can’t back San Jose State. The Spartans rank 126th in total yards allowed, are 129th in passing yards allowed, and are 114th in points allowed through the first two weeks of the season. They also can’t move the ball, averaging just 19 points per game, which ranks 115th in the nation. This San Jose State team is bad so even if Oregon looks ahead to Stanford, this could be 40-0 at halftime. Is there value in the Spartans? Sure. But I’d rather take the dominant team.
