Stanford vs. San Diego St. Pick
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Stanford is favored on the road in this game, as the Cardinal are getting odds of -8.5 points against the Aztecs. The over/under total for the contest is listed at 48.5 points. These two teams haven’t met since the 1988 season. Saturday’s game will be played from Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California and air live on the CBS Sports Network.
Stanford is off to a 1-1 start following its 42-24 loss at USC last weekend. The Cardinal are 1-1 against the spread thus far in 2017 as well. Stanford looked terrible on defense last week, allowing 623 yards to the Trojans, including 307 rushing yards. Stanford was held to just 342 total yards in the loss as well. Bryce Love managed 160 rushing yards and a touchdown, but Keller Chryst was just 15-of-28 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Chryst has 425 yards and four touchdowns on the season while Love has 340 rushing yards.
San Diego State is off to a 2-0 start this year with wins over UC-Davis at home and at Arizona State. The Aztecs are also 1-1 against the spread this season. San Diego State is allowing just 18.5 points and 328.5 yards per game right now, including just 50.5 rushing yards per contest. The offense is putting up 34 points per game and an impressive 277.5 rushing yards per contest. Rashaad Penny has been tough to stop. He has 413 yards on 39 carries with three touchdowns through two games. Juwan Washington is adding 122 rushing yards while Christian Chapman has 293 passing yards with three touchdowns.
The trends are good with Stanford, but I think the oddsmakers are overlooking San Diego State a little bit. The Aztecs have a coach that knows how to run the football and win tough games. They managed a nice win at Arizona State last week and are facing a Stanford team that looked very suspect against the run against USC. San Diego State won’t be intimidated for this game and I like them at home getting more than a touchdown.
