Texas Longhorns Game Notes
Texas HC Steve Sarkisian said on Monday that he will continue to look for opportunities to get redshirt sophomore QB Casey Thompson into games. Thompson (6’1/194) finished second in the Longhorns’ starting quarterback competition to freshman Hudson Card, who played well in the season-opening win over Louisiana. Thompson did get some reps Saturday afternoon, completing 4-of-5 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, but he was the clear second fiddle to Card. On Monday, Sarkisian said that he’ll continue to do what he can to get Thompson onto the field. “You’ve got to make sure your backup is prepared to play when his number is called in critical moments.” It’s quite clear at this point that there’s a clear pecking order in the Texas quarterback room, which wasn’t the case for most of preseason camp.
Arkansas Razorbacks Game Notes
Arkansas redshirt junior RB Trelon Smith ran for 102 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown in Saturday’s 38-17 win over Rice. Smith’s 2-yard touchdown run with 12:44 left in the fourth quarter gave Arkansas its first lead of the game, breaking a 17-17 tie. From there, it was all Hogs. Arkansas picked off three Rice passes in the fourth quarter during a 21-0 run to close the game. Smith is going to be relied upon heavily in next week’s game against Texas.
