Boise State opened up the season last week with a 24-13 win over Troy at home. The Broncos were able to narrowly cover the 10.5-point spread in the process. The win was a credit to the defense, as Troy had just 215 yards of offense. Boise State also struggled to move the ball, as the Broncos had only 357 yards. Brett Rypien threw for 160 yards on 13-of-23 passing while Montell Cozart threw for 50 yards and rushed for 36. Alexander Mattison was the leading rusher for Boise State with 82 yards and a touchdown.
Washington State started the year with a 31-0 win over Montana State last week, but the Cougars were a 41-point favorite entering the game. Washington State showed an impressive defensive effort, allowing just 143 total yards. Offensively, Washington State posted 511 total yards. Luke Falk threw for 311 yards and three touchdown to lead the team while James Williams caught 13 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Morrow was the leading rusher with 89 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.
Washington State looks to be a team on the verge of really being a major player in the Pac-12. The Cougars should always have an offense to count on, but their defense looks to be on the rise. Boise State may pose a challenge with its defense, but I don’t see the Broncos having a lot of success on offense tonight. Washington State is likely to score more often than Boise State can keep pace with. The Cougars have covered in five straight meetings with Boise for a reason.
