Michigan State survives Utah State
The Spartans got a real scare in their opener last Friday, holding off Utah State for a 38-31 victory. MSU failed to cover as a 23.5-point favorite at home while going over the 52.5-point total. MSU has hit the over in three straight comes, dating back to last season.
MSU trailed 31-30 late into the game but scored the game-winning touchdown with two minutes remaining. The Spartans allowed 344 yards to Utah State, including 319 passing yards. On offense, Michigan State finished with 452 total yards. Brian Lewerke threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 31 yards. LJ Scott was the leading rusher with 84 yards on 23 carries.
Strong debut for Edwards
Herm Edwards made his college coaching debut for Arizona State last Saturday and it was a solid one, with the Sun Devils defeating Texas-San Antonio 49-7. ASU was able to easily cover the 17-point spread at home while going over the 52-point total. The Sun Devils have hit the over in six of their last seven games.
In last week’s win, Arizona State put up 503 yards of offense through a balanced attack while holding UTSA to just 221 total yards and only three rushing yards on 33 attempts. Eno Benjamin rushed for a team-high 131 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while quarterback Manny Wilkins threw for 237 yards and four scores on 16 of 24 passing. Receiver N’Keal Harry had six catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Michigan State
Michigan State has hit the over in five of its last six games against Pac-12 opponents and in five of its last seven on the road.
Arizona State
Arizona State has hit the over in four of its last five home games and five of its last seven non-conference contests.
Prediction:
This is an intriguing game, as we still don’t really know the identity of the Arizona State team under Herm Edwards. They looked great against UTSA, but this is a step up against Michigan State. The Spartans struggled to stop the Utah State offense and could struggle going out West for a late night game. MSU tends to play to the level of its competition, so I could see this game featuring a lot of big offensive plays. I like what the Spartans can do on offense and they should test this ASU defense a lot more than what the Roadrunners did.
