Iowa State goes 8-5
Iowa State is making its 2018 debut this week. The Cyclones are coming off an 8-5 year with a 5-4 record in the Big 12. Matt Campbell is coming into his third season as head coach of Iowa State and has an 11-14 record. Iowa State was an impressive 11-2 against the spread last season and 9-4 with the under.
Last year, Iowa State had an offense that put up 380 points over 13 games while allowing just 272 points. The offense was led by returning running back, David Montgomery. He rushed for 1,146 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2017. Kyle Kempt also returns at quarterback. He threw for 1,787 yards and 15 touchdowns with three interceptions. He came on late in the year and established himself as their starting QB.
Iowa impressive in opener
Iowa opened its season with an impressive win at home over Northern Illinois, 33-7. The Hawkeyes covered the 9.5-point spread in the victory while going under the 46-point total. It was just their second under in their last six games.
In last week’s win, Iowa was dominant on defense, holding NIU to just 211 total yards and only 110 passing yards. Offensively, Iowa put up 352 total yards with 209 rushing yards. Toren Young led the way with 84 yards on eight carries while Ivory Kelly-Martin had 62 yards on 16 carries. Both men scored in the win. Nate Stanley threw for just 108 yards on 11 of 23 passing.
College Football Betting Trends
Iowa State
Iowa State has hit the under in its last five road games and in seven of their last eight games overall.
Iowa
Iowa has hit the under in six of its last eight non-conference games and 11 of its last 16 against Big 12 opponents.
Prediction:
The total can’t be set low enough in this one. Despite these two posting 85 points in an OT classic last year, this should be a completely defensive battle. Iowa State has a strong defense that should be able to contain the Iowa run game. At home, I expect the Hawkeyes to be tough at the line of scrimmage on defense as well. I don’t see Iowa State being able to look smooth on offense in its first game. Look for the points to be hard to come by in this one.
