MWC Championship Prediction
The Mountain Western Conference has been known for being the conference of Boise State. Can the Broncos earn another conference title in the 2019 season?
According to oddsmakers, Boise State is the clear favorite to win, as the Broncos have 1/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Fresno State (5/1), San Diego State (5/1) and Utah State (8/1).
Despite a strong showing throughout the years in this conference, Boise State has only won the MWC Championship Game twice in six years. They reached the game last year, but lost to Fresno State in OT. The Broncos have 13 starters back from a solid 2018 team. Most of the returning players come on the line, which should make them very difficult to move around.
Fresno State won the league last year and has won this conference title game twice while reaching the championship game two other times. Fresno State only returns eight starters from last year’s team, including just two on offense.
San Diego State has won the conference title game twice in program history. The Aztecs were just 4-4 in MWC play last year. San Diego State has nine starters back this year, but six are back on offense. They were one of the nation’s least productive offenses in 2018, averaging just 20.6 points per game.
Utah State hasn’t won the MWC Championship Game, but they did reach the final in 2013. The Aggies tied Boise State for first in the Mountain Division last year, but lost the tiebreaker. Utah State has just nine starters back in 2019, with only two on offense. One that is back is Jordan Love at QB. He led the Utah State offense to 47.5 points per game last year.
Boise State definitely is the favorite and should be for good reason. The other contenders have a lot of holes to fill. Utah State could be dangerous with Love back, but a new offensive line raises some concerns. Boise State has to replace a lot of starters at the skill positions, but a veteran line should help spark the run game while the new starting QB settles in. The Boise State defense should also be one of the top units in the country this year, taking a lot of pressure off the offense.
