Northwestern 2013 Season Odds
(TheSpread) – More known for being a laughing stock than a championship contender, it looks like 2013 could be the year Northwestern breaks out in the college football world.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Northwestern has been given 150/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Wildcats have also been given odds of +900 to win the Big Ten Championship and odds of +325 to win the Big Ten Legends Division.
Pat Fitzgerald enters his eighth season with Northwestern and the Wildcats are coming off a 10-3 record in the 2012 season, its best in Fitzgerald’s time with the program. Northwestern had a strong balance of offense and defense in 2012 and this year’s team returns 17 starters for the 2013 season.
Offensively, Northwestern will go as far as senior quarterback Kain Colter can take it. Colter dealt with some injuries during the season, but when healthy, he is a dual-threat pain for opposing defenses. Colter had 894 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns and 872 passing yards with eight scores in 2012. He comes into this season as a possible Heisman Trophy winner, as Colter has been given 33/1 odds to win the award. Colter also has running back Venric Mark to work with this season. Mark rushed for a team-high 1,366 yards in 2012.
On defense, Northwestern returns seven starters from a group that held opponents to 22.5 points and 378 yards per game. The Wildcats were strong against the run, ranking third in the Big Ten with just 128 yards allowed per game on the ground. Northwestern has four starters back on its front seven, led by senior linebacker Damien Proby, who had 112 tackles a season ago. Senior defensive end Tyler Scott also returns after picking up nine sacks in 2012.
