Alabama Still Favored to win 2019 Title
In no surprise, the Alabama Crimson Tide remain favored to win the 2019 College Football National Championship. All is not perfect in Tuscaloosa, however, as their star quarterback did not play in the program's recent spring game.
Betting odds for Week 1 of the college football season will be coming out soon. You can find Betting Odds for every future game at our new NCAA College Football Odds Page.
The Favorite: Alabama Crimson Tide
According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook YouWager, the Crimson Tide are 9/4 favorites to repeat as national champions in 2019. Alabama recently had its spring game and sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa did not play due to a finger injury.
"[Tagovailoa] re-injured his hand and we were going to hold him out the rest of the spring," Alabama HC Nick Saban said on Tuesday, "So that hasn't changed."
Tagovailoa had been fighting his way back from a broken left index finger sustained in the team's opening practice last month. Jalen Hurts has had the spring all to himself as he tries to put a little distance between himself and Tagovailoa heading into August camp. It's unlikely that Hurts will hold onto the job if Tagovailoa is healthy.
The Main Competitor: Clemson Tigers
Dabo Swinney's program is listed as 6/1 to win the national championship, giving the Tigers the next-best odds to win it all behind Alabama. Recently Swinney said that quarterback Kelly Bryant is "still, at this point, No. 1 if we played today."
That said, there will be a position battle before the 2018 season kicks off. Bryant is the current starter after playing all 14 games last season for Clemson. He is being pushed, however, by former five-star recruit sophomore Hunter Johnson. No. 1 overall recruit and true freshman Trevor Lawrence (who put on a show this spring) are also vying for playing time.
Fellow Contenders: Ohio State Buckeyes & Georgia Bulldogs
The Buckeyes are 15/2 to win the national championship in 2019 while the Bulldogs are 8/1 after blowing an opportunity to upset the Crimson Tide in last season's title game.
Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer noted that he would let redshirt junior quarterback Joe Burrow know his place in the pecking order at the end of spring practice. He will be graduating later this spring and could potentially transfer if Meyer goes with either Dwayne Haskins or Tate Martell under center.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, don't have any questions about who will be quarterbacking their offense this fall. Sophomore Jake Fromm is a 10/1 favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2018 after nearly leading UGA to victory in the national championship this past season.
