Clemson Favored to win 2021 National Title
Clemson suffered defeat Monday night in the 2020 College Football National Championship, but oddsmakers have installed the Tigers as favorites to win next year’s title with quarterback Trevor Lawrence set to return.
According to oddsmakers from Caesars Casino & Sportsbook, Clemson has opened with +200 odds to win the 2021 College Football Championship. Lawrence, a sophomore this past season, completed just 18-of-37 passes for 234 yards while rushing 10 times for 49 yards and a touchdown in Clemson’s 42-25 loss to LSU. While Lawrence toppled the Alabama dynasty a year ago, he couldn’t keep up with Joe Burrow and LSU’s dynamic offense. As of this writing, Lawrence’s teammate Travis Etienne has yet to declare for the NFL draft but he’s expected to considering he might be a first-round selection.
Alabama & Ohio State
Despite missing out on the playoffs this season, the Crimson Tide have the next-best odds behind Clemson to win next year’s title at +450. Ohio State, which fell to Clemson in the semi-finals this past season, is also +450 with quarterback Justin Fields set to return as a junior. J.K. Dobbins and Chase Young, however, will both enter the NFL draft, as will Alabama signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa and receivers Devonta Smith and Henry Ruggs. Running back Najee Harris will return to Tuscaloosa.
What about the defending national champs? As expected, the Tigers are not favored with Burrow headed to the NFL. LSU does return dynamic receiver Ja’Marr Chase, but the futures of Thaddeus Moss and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Another huge loss will be passing game coordinator Joe Brady, who is expected to be the next offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. Brady had reportedly agreed to a three-year extension to remain at LSU, but less than 24 hours after the Tigers completed a 15-0 season, Brady is jumping ship. LSU opened as +600 to repeat as national champions next season.
The Bulldogs round out the top 5 in terms of the odds, as Georgia is +1000 to win the national championship in 2021. Junior quarterback Jake Fromm declared for the 2020 NFL Draft last week, so former Wake Forest redshirt junior Jamie Newman is the overwhelming favorite to win the job this spring. Under head coach Kirby Smart, UGA has routinely churned out top-three recruiting classes and will once again be one of the more talented teams on paper entering the 2020-21 season.
