Georgia comes up short in SEC final
Georgia saw its national title hopes come to an end in a 37-10 loss to LSU in the SEC Championship Game earlier in December. The Bulldogs are 11-2 on the season, 7-6 against the spread and 10-3 with the under.
The Bulldogs have been one of the top defenses in the nation all season. They are allowing just 12.5 points and 274.5 yards per game this year. Their offense has been okay, but nothing special. Georgia averages 31.2 points and 411.1 yards per game. The Bulldogs have some players electing not to play in this bowl game, which could impact them on both sides of the ball. All-American lineman Andrew Thomas and All-American DB J.R. Reed are among the players not playing. Jake Fromm will play and he has thrown for 2,610 yards and 22 touchdowns to lead the offense. D’Andre Swift has rushed for 1,216 yards and seven scores, while George Pickens is the leading receiver with 37 catches for 552 yards and seven touchdowns.
Baylor falls twice to Oklahoma
Baylor wasn’t far from a possible playoff appearance. The Bears suffered a 30-23 OT loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship and saw the Sooners go on to face LSU in the semifinals. Baylor only suffered two losses all season and both were to Oklahoma by single digits. The Bears are 11-2 on the season, 9-4 against the spread and 7-6 with the under.
Baylor has been steady on both sides of the ball this year. The offense is putting up 35.2 points and 431.2 yards per game, while the defense is allowing just 19.3 points and 358.9 yards per contest. Charlie Brewer is leading the Baylor offense with 2,950 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. He also has rushed for 337 yards and 10 scores. Denzel Mims has been his top receiver with 61 catches for 945 yards and 11 touchdowns while John Lovett is the leading rusher with 637 yards and five scores. James Lynch is leading the defense with 39 tackles and 12.5 sacks.
College Football Betting Trends
Georgia
The Bulldogs are 5-1 against the spread in their last six bowl games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games on a neutral field.
Baylor
The Bears are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games as an underdog at a neutral site and 24-9 ATS in their last 33 games as an underdog.
Prediction:
Baylor has had a great year, but the Bears are going to be facing a defense unlike anything they have seen this season. Georgia’s defense has held up against anyone not named LSU. I think the Bulldogs will be able to lock up the Bears just fine. Don’t look for a lot of big plays from Baylor. The Georgia offense isn’t one to put up a lot of points either. Even in dominant games, they seem to level out at around 21-28 points. That shouldn’t be an issue in covering the spread. The Bulldogs may not give up much in this game, so they won’t need to score much to cover.
