Purdue Game Notes

Purdue junior center Zach Edey is having a monster year. The 7’4” 295-pound Toronto native is fourth in the country in scoring with 23.2 points per game and second in the nation in rebounding with 13.3 per game. He’s also shooting well both from the field (60.8%) and the free throw line (73.9%). If that wasn’t enough, Edey also leads the Boilermakers in blocked shots with 1.8 per contest.

One of Purdue’s most important players is freshman guard Braden Smith. The 6’0” Westfield, Indiana native is third on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game, second on the club in assists with 3.6 per game, and leads the team in steals with 1.7 per game. Smith is a deadeye shooter as well, as he’s making 43.3% of his three-point tries and 92.3% of his free throws. Purdue will need big contributions from Zach Edey and Braden Smith to cover on the road this weekend. 

Nebraska Game Notes

Nebraska’s leading scorer and leading rebounder is senior forward Derrick Walker. Walker is averaging 15.6 points per game and 8.6 boards per game while shooting a terrific 73.1% from the field. He’s recorded at least 10 points and 5 rebounds in each of the 5 games he’s played this year, and he’ll likely have to continue that trend for Nebraska to cover against Purdue.

Nebraska’s leading assist man is 6’7” senior guard Sam Griesel. Griesel is dishing out 4.9 dimes per game. He also ranks third on Nebraska in points per game with 11.3 and second on the club with 1.3 steals per game. Griesel is making 50.7% of his shots from the field and he’ll likely need to continue his hot shooting for the Huskers to cover this game.

Purdue is very good. They might be one of the best teams in the nation. But playing in Lincoln is extremely difficult for even the best Big Ten teams. With college football over, I think the students show up in force and Purdue struggles in a hostile environment. Nebraska might not win the game, but they won’t have to in order to cover the number. I’ll take the Huskers and the points.
