Terrapins top Nittany Lions in conference opener

Maryland opened Big Ten Conference play Saturday with a 66-59 home victory over Penn State. The Terrapins (7-1, 1-0) outscored the Nittany Lions 36-28 in the second half to secure the win and shot 22-of-45 from the floor for the game. Jalen Smith paced Maryland with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting plus eight rebounds. Anthony Cowan Jr. tallied 15 points, four assists and two boards. Bruno Fernando added 12 points, 13 rebounds and two assists off the bench.

Boilermakers drop second straight at Michigan

Purdue was outscored 44-28 in the first half Saturday afternoon in a 76-57 loss at fifth-ranked Michigan. The Boilermakers (5-3, 0-1) shot only 22-of-62 from the floor in the defeat. Carsen Edwards led Purdue with 19 points on 7-of-21 shooting plus six rebounds and four assists. Ryan Cline added 15 points, two rebounds, two dimes and two steals.
