Wolverines dominate defensively
After downing Norfolk State by a count of 63-44 in its season opener, 18th-ranked Michigan once again displayed a tremendous defensive effort in a 56-37 victory over visiting Holy Cross Saturday night. The Wolverines trailed 24-18 at halftime before erupting in the second half as it outscored the visitors 38-13 the rest of the way. Charles Matthews led Michigan with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting plus two rebounds. Ignas Brazdeikis added 19 points plus seven rebounds and three assists.
Wildcats dominate Quinnipiac
Eighth-ranked Villanova had no issues Saturday night at home versus Quinnipiac as it cruised to an 86-53 victory. Phil Booth led the Wildcats with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting with five assists, three boards and two steals. Collin Gillespie tallied 16 points, two rebounds and two steals. Prediction:
Villanova hasn’t been tested yet, so tonight will be interesting to see how it handles a squad of Michigan’s caliber. Some of the names are different from last season when the Wildcats dominated the national title game to the tune of 79-62. Now on its home floor for this one and with plenty of firepower back in the fold, I think Villanova has plenty in the tank to win this one convincingly. If Michigan plays the way it did during the first half against Holy Cross, good night and good luck.
