Pirates roll past NJIT

Hampton cruised to an 82-70 victory Thursday night over the Highlanders in the CIT quarterfinals to advance to today's semifinals with an 18-16 record. The Pirates established a 41-26 halftime advantage en route to the win. Hampton shot 32-of-67 from the field, 3-of-17 from 3-point range plus 15-of-19 at the free throw line in the winning effort. Jermaine Marrow paced the Pirates with 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting including 1-of-5 from 3-point range plus 3-of-5 at the charity stripe. He also accounted for five rebounds and four assists. Greg Heckstall tallied 19 points, 10 boards and four dimes. Kalin Fisher had 16 points and four rebounds. Trevond Barnes accumulated 13 points, 12 caroms and three blocked shots. Akim Mitchell added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Thundering Herd dominate Blue Hose

Marshall recorded an 83-66 home win over Presbyterian Tuesday night in the CIT quarterfinals to move to the semifinals with a 21-14 record. The Thundering Herd outscored the Blue Hose 44-34 in the second half after leading by seven at the break. Marshall shot 29-of-60 from the floor, 6-of-16 from 3-point distance plus 19-of-24 at the free throw line. C.J. Burks paced the Thundering Herd with 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting plus 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Jon Elmore tallied 16 points, seven boards, five steals and three assists. Rondale Watson registered 12 points and two rebounds off the bench. Darius George added 10 points and six caroms.

This game will be a track meet with the Thundering Herd playing at the fifth-fastest pace in the nation, while Hampton isn't too far behind at 31st in tempo. Both teams are actually very good at taking care of the basketball, but Marshall is the much better team at forcing turnovers and getting into transition. Neither team is very good defensively, but I give the Thundering Herd are slightly better on that end and on their home court. Go with Marshall here.
