West Virginia vs. Gonzaga Prediction
Can West Virginia upset Gonzaga tonight in the NCAA tournament? Tip-off for this matchup is set for 7:39PM ET.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Gonzaga is a 3-point favorite versus West Virginia for tonight's Sweet 16 matchup. The total, meanwhile, currently sits at 148.5 points, up from the original number of 147.5.
The Mountaineers put together a sound effort in their 86-80 win over Bucknell in the opening round of the tournament, but they failed to cover as 13-point favorites. In the second round, they thumped Notre Dame 83-71, cruising to an easy cover as a 3-point favorite. That was West Virginia's first win at the betting window in its last four attempts.
The Bulldogs beat South Dakota State 66-46 in their opening-round matchup, then held on to defeat Northwestern 79-73 in the second round. That said, Gonzaga didn't do bettors any favors, as the team failed to cover as a 23-point favorite against SDS, and as a 10.5-point favorite versus the Wildcats.
OUR PREDICTION: The Bulldogs are a sound team that doesn't make a lot of mistakes, but the Mountaineers' defensive pressure gives most teams headaches. West Virginia averages 10.2 steals per game and have the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in Jevon Carter. Nigel-Williams Gross and Jordan Mathews are experienced point guards for the Bulldogs, but "Press" Virginia should convert enough takeaways into points to keep this game close, if not win outright.
