Scarlet Knights drop out of 25

Rutgers lost by a score of 69-63 Saturday as the road team in a matchup with Michigan at Madison Square Garden to drop to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in the Big Ten Conference. Montez Mathis led the Scarlet Knights with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting including 2-of-5 from 3-point distance plus 1-of-1 at the free throw line. He also registered eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Akwasi Yeboah tallied 10 points, seven boards and two steals. Caleb McConnell contributed 10 points and three caroms. Jacob Young added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals off the bench. Rutgers was outscored 32-29 in the second half of the defeat.

Terrapins race past Hawkeyes

Maryland posted an 83-72 home win Thursday night over Iowa to move to 17-4 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten. The Terrapins outscored the Hawkeyes 46-40 in the second half to pull away. Anthony Cowan Jr. led Maryland with 31 points on 9-of-15 shooting including 3-of-8 from 3-point distance plus 10-of-11 at the charity stripe. He also recorded six rebounds and six assists. Jalen Smith accounted for 18 points, 14 boards and five blocked shots. Aaron Wiggins tallied 14 points and five caroms off the bench. Darryl Morsell added 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Prediction:

Rutgers has been the surprise of the Big Ten this season, but could be in danger of fading further with several tough games on the docket the next few weeks. While I don't see the Scarlet Knights coming out on top tonight, their grit and determination should keep this competitive. Rutgers has the 12th-rated defense nationally in terms of adjusted efficiency and I think it will lead to enough frustrating possessions by Maryland to stay within the number.
