Texas Game Notes

The Longhorns’ best player is senior guard Marcus Carr. The 6’2” Toronto native is fourth in the Big 12 in scoring with 17.6 points per game and fourth in the conference with an average of 2.6 made three-pointers per game. For the season Carr is converting an efficient 41.5% of his attempts from beyond the arc.

The man in the middle for Texas is senior forward Timmy Allen. Allen leads the club in rebounding with 5.3 per game and ranks second on the club in scoring with 10.7 points per game. Allen has recorded double-figure scoring numbers in 9 of the Longhorns’ last 12 games and he may need to do so again if they’re going to cover against Tennessee. 

Tennessee Game Notes

Tennessee guard Santiago Vescovi does a little bit of everything for the Volunteers. The Uruguayan national leads the club in scoring (12.2 points per game) and steals (2.4 swipes per game). Vescovi is also chipping in 4.1 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game for the Vols this year.

Tennessee freshman forward Julian Phillips has shown a lot of promise this year. Phillips has recorded at least 10 points in 4 out of his last 7 games and he’s tied for the team lead in rebounds with 5.3 per contest. Tennessee will need all hands on deck to cover against a high-powered Texas offense this weekend.

Texas has gone 10-2 under interim head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns have won 5 out of their last 6 games. I think Texas, who is one of only 18 teams to average at least 80 points per game, is able to keep it close enough to compete with Tennessee in this contest. I’ll take the Longhorns and the points on the road.
