Sun Devils down Tigers
Arizona State notched a 98-81 home win last Saturday over Texas Southern to improve to 9-4 overall and 6-1 at home. The Sun Devils led 48-33 at halftime on their way to the victory. Alonzo Verge Jr. helped lead Arizona State with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting including 2-of-2 from 3-point distance plus 1-of-1 at the free throw line. He also registered seven assists, six rebounds and two steals. Remy Martin also scored 23 points to go with five boards, five dimes and two steals. Jaelen House had 20 points, two caroms and two steals off the bench. Kimani Lawrence added 11 points, three rebounds and three steals as a reserve.
Wildcats drop second straight
Arizona fell 70-67 back on December 22 against St. John’s in the Basketball Hall of Fame Al Attles Classic in San Francisco to drop to 10-3 on the season. Zeke Nnaji paced the Wildcats with 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting plus 8-of-10 at the free throw line. He also racked up 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Nico Mannion registered 19 points, three assists and three steals. Josh Green added 11 points, six boards and two dimes. Arizona trailed 40-26 at halftime and its rally attempt after the break fell short.

Prediction:
Arizona has not played in a couple of weeks and while it has had plenty of time to stew over its last two losses, I’m worried about the rust factor. The Sun Devils had the benefit of a game last weekend and also beat the same St. John’s team by 13 on a neutral court that Arizona lost to its last contest. While the Wildcats are the better team, rivalry games have a way of being closer than they sometimes should be on paper. I’m taking the points in this situation.
